Action I5 and I6 teams collaborate to get water quality information through targeted science and community engagement

The Department of Natural Resources and Water is one of the government agencies working towards the goal of the Reef Water Quality Protection Plan. In 2007, NRW provided leadership on two key Reef Plan monitoring and evaluation actions:

Action I5—monitoring long-term trends in water quality (pollutant loads) entering the Reef lagoon from high-risk catchments, and
Action I6—community and industry-based monitoring of long-term trends in water quality in high-risk sub-catchments (in partnership with Regional NRM Bodies).

The Great Barrier Reef I5 Load Monitoring Project Team and the State Community Waterway Monitoring Team (I6) are working together with the Reef Water Quality Partnership and other regional NRM stakeholders to integrate community and agency-based event monitoring in Reef catchments and foster collaborative monitoring partnerships. These activities are improving the community’s ownership of state and regional monitoring programs and helping to ensure Reef Plan actions have both community and scientific credibility and lead to improvements in the health of the Reef and its river catchments.
