Who is the Reef Plan Secretariat?

The Reef Plan Secretariat comprises five staff located in the Queensland Department of the Premier and Cabinet.

Grahame Byron, Director of the team, describes the work of the Secretariat as "coordinating the extensive network of government and non-government organisations involved, developing and supporting the strategies, reviewing and reporting on the progress of each of the activities, and communicating the outcomes" of Reef Plan.

The Secretariat’s primary role is to help secure Reef Plan’s goal and objectives by developing policies, coordinating the policies of governments, engaging and negotiating with stakeholders and building partnerships.

In the near future, the Secretariat will commence revitalising and updating Reef Plan in line with the recommendations contained in the 2005 Report to the Prime Minister and Premier, feedback from stakeholders and the priorities of government.

A comprehensive and detailed communication strategy will be implemented to report the many positive outcomes that have already been achieved from Reef Plan activities. More effective engagement with non-government stakeholders and the wider community will be pursued to improve public confidence in the implementation of Reef Plan.
