Nutrient Management Zones
The Australian and Queensland Governments have identified Nutrient Management Zones (NMZs) to enable prioritisation of areas to focus efforts to minimise the impact of nutrients on the Reef.
Planning initiatives
The role of planning within Reef Plan is to make better use of existing planning mechanisms to improve land use and development control decisions, with resulting improvements in the quality of water flowing into the Reef, and to ensure the best available information supports these decisions.
Sustainable production
Peak Industry Bodies, government agencies and Regional NRM Bodies are delivering many programs in Reef catchments to help achieve the Reef Plan’s goal.
Water quality improvement plans
Water quality improvement plans (WQIPs) are catchment and regionally based water quality management plans. They seek to improve water quality by reducing the amount of key pollutants (e.g. nutrients, sediment and chemicals) from the Reef catchments entering waterways and carried to the Reef lagoon.
Water quality monitoring
Under the Reef Plan's actions relating to water quality monitoring the Australian and Queensland Governments are seeking to improve the coordination of current water quality monitoring systems.
Wetlands
It is not easy to provide a clear definition of a wetland. They are neither just land, nor just water. They can actually be both at the same time, or seasonally aquatic, or terrestrial.
