Water quality monitoring

Under the Reef Plan's actions relating to water quality monitoring the Australian and Queensland Governments are seeking to improve the coordination of current water quality monitoring systems. Complementary water quality monitoring and reporting systems are being developed, which will better track the long-term trends of water quality entering the Reef lagoon and its effects on the inshore marine environment.

Monitoring and reporting improvements in land use practices, in addition to changes in water quality and flood events, are necessary to evaluate the success of the Reef Plan actions.

Community groups, industries and regional NRM bodies are working with the Australian and Queensland Governments to monitor water quality and land use management actions that help improve water quality.

There are a number of water quality monitoring programs relevant to the Reef Plan.

Work is underway to ensure that these programs align to achieve Reef Plan goals and objectives.
