Land use

The Great Barrier Reef receives run-off from six natural resource management regions and 35 catchments which drain 424,000 square kilometres of coastal Queensland.

The majority of water pollution flowing to the Reef comes from agricultural industries in the catchments including grazing, sugarcane, horticulture, banana, cotton and grain farming.

Urban and industrial land uses provide a relatively small contribution to water pollution overall but can have important local impacts.
